When all you have is a forklift… everything looks like a pallet

Did you know that in the US there is a forklift fatality every 3 days?  There are also 95,000 non-fatal forklift related injuries a year.  Businesses are now spending thousands of dollars per year on forklift training and education.   Many businesses require certification for their forklift drivers.   We applaud the efforts to improve forklift safety.     We believe there is a more effective way to reduce forklift accidents than safety training: eliminate the forklift.    The forklift is a valuable tool in many situations; however, there are a many cases where the forklift is not the optimal tool, yet it is still used.  Some common reasons for using forklifts when other machines would work better:

  • Lack of knowledge of what else is available
  • The company has always used forklifts
  • Unwillingness to invest in multiple material handling systems

A common expression that seems to apply for forklifts is: “If the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail”.   In some cases forklifts are not ideal because there are:

  • Higher risks of accidents
  • Higher risks of material damage
  • Higher training costs
  • Higher maintenance costs
  • Higher energy usage
  • Higher capital costs

In some cases the most expensive, least effective solution is the forklift.   We at Load Mover believe we have a superior material moving solution.   The power movers are safer, less expensive and easier to handle than a forklift.   Go to www.loadmoverinc.com for more information on power movers.
